Awkward
by Svetlana Chumakova

If you love comic books and graphic novels, then you will definitely want to read Awkward. From the title and graphics to the story line and the relatable characters, this book is a treat for any reader. After all, Awkward is a great way to summarize many of the moments that make up the middle school experience. Yet, the humorous way in which this story address “awkward moments” is uplifting and optimistic and provides hope for anyone who has ever struggled to fit in.
This book focuses on Penelope Torres, Peppi for short, who is the new kid at Berrybrook Middle School. Peppi has created two very important Cardinal Rules before beginning school. Rule Number 1: Don’t get noticed by the mean kids (p. 6). Cardinal Rule #2: Seek out groups with similar interests and join them (p.12). Yet, Peppi’s well-laid plan quickly goes astray.
From the first day of school, Peppi struggles to deal with the ups and downs of middle school. She soon realizes that friendship can be a challenge. She also has to learn to handle an ever growing tension between the art and science club members. This is a fun tale that will keep you smiling for days after you’ve finished reading. Highly recommended!
